{"id":1089,"date":"2012-09-30T17:47:46","date_gmt":"2012-09-30T22:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bethknittle.net\/WP_Blog\/?p=1089"},"modified":"2012-09-30T17:47:46","modified_gmt":"2012-09-30T22:47:46","slug":"college-high-school-and-homework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bethknittle.net\/WP_Blog\/?p=1089","title":{"rendered":"College, High School and Homework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I guess I am currently\u00a0sensitive\u00a0to the &#8216;homework&#8221; issue. \u00a0I wanted to share with you a post by Scott McLeod, <a href=\"http:\/\/dangerouslyirrelevant.org\/2012\/09\/homework-authoritarianism-and-student-choice.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+dangerouslyirrelevant+%28Dangerously+Irrelevant%29\" target=\"_blank\">Homework Authoritarianism and Student Choice<\/a>. \u00a0I was\u00a0particularly\u00a0struck\u00a0by the section regarding college vs high school work expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Here in MA schools must\u00a0provide\u00a0a\u00a0minimum\u00a0of 990 hrs of structured\u00a0instruction\u00a0over a 180 day school year. \u00a0That works out to be about 27.5 hrs a week of structured instruction, this is exclusive of study, lunch, homeroom and passing time. So a typical HS student is in an academic class for 27.5 hrs a week. \u00a0If schools assign 2-3 hrs of homework at night then using 2.5 as an average that is 12.5 hrs of homework a week. Therefore a typical HS student is doing a full 40 hr work (school) week . \u00a0It is hard to\u00a0believe\u00a0there is even a movement to extend the day.<\/p>\n<p>Looking over my daughter&#8217;s college\u00a0schedule\u00a0and through various colleges&#8217; typical course load as shown on their websites, college students are in class about. 13.5 hrs a week. \u00a0This means the typical college student has 14 less hours in class then a HS student and therefor 14 more hours to get their work done.<\/p>\n<p>These are are my rough\u00a0calculations.<\/p>\n<p>So HS<\/p>\n<p>180 days\/yr, 990 hr\/yr of instruction, 27.5 hrs\/week of class<\/p>\n<p>College<\/p>\n<p>130 days\/yr, 25o hr\/yr of instruction, 13.5 hrs\/week of class<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I guess I am currently\u00a0sensitive\u00a0to the &#8216;homework&#8221; issue. \u00a0I wanted to share with you a post by Scott McLeod, Homework Authoritarianism and Student Choice. \u00a0I was\u00a0particularly\u00a0struck\u00a0by the section regarding college vs high school work expectations.
